Community residents, environmental organizations and elected officials meet with United States Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to discussion the Urban Waters Partnership and collaborative efforts to revitalize the Harlem River

(Bronx NY, October 27, 2011) Community residents and environmental organizations will gather at Roberto Clemente State Park — the only Bronx State park, located along the Harlem River to welcome Secretary Ken Salazar and celebrate the Harlem River.

“The Harlem River is a wonderful asset. We are excited to welcome the Secretary to witness our hard work in the rebirth of the Harlem River,” stated Anita Antonetty, long time community resident and Harlem River Working Group Member.

Community residents, environmental organizations and elected officials will hold a press conference at 2:00 pm in support of Secretary Salazar announcement of Urban Waters Partnership and America’s Great Outdoors – both national initiatives taking place across the nation and in the Bronx. Other federal, state and city agencies are expected to attend, as are local Bronx elected officials: Borough President Ruben Diaz, Congressman Jose Serrano, State Senator Marco Serrano, and State Assemblywoman Vanessa L. Gibson, among others. Together, this local perspective recognizes the community’s renaissance vision for a greenway and waterfront access for Bronx communities along Harlem River.

“I have been a part of planning meetings for the Harlem River and the surrounding area for the last 30 years” says Dart Westphal, community leader and Bronx Council for Environmental Quality (BCEQ) Board Member, “I am glad to be a member of the Harlem River Working Group and to see plans long discussed finally being implemented due to the collaboration between city, state and federal elected officials and departments, particularly, the NYC Parks Department, and community residents.”

Harlem River Working Group Coordinator, Chauncy Young, notes “Over the past four years since the formation of the Harlem River Working Group, we have been effective in making the Harlem River a focus for community residents and their representatives and government agencies, the Harlem River was designated as one of seven locations across the United States designated for the new Urban Waters Federal Partnership and both Massachusetts Institute for Technology and Columbia University have worked with community members to develop visions for the Harlem River Waterfront.”

Community members will be available for comments on local perspectives following the press event.

Date: Friday October 28, 2011

The Fracking Industry’s War On TheNew York Times — And The Truth

10/20/11, Robert Kennedy, President, Waterkeeper Alliance; Professor, Pace University

Superb investigative journalism by the New York Times has brought the paper under attack by the natural gas industry. That campaign of intimidation and obfuscation has been orchestrated by top shelf players like Exxon and Chesapeake aligned with the industry’s worst bottom feeders. This coalition has launched an impressive propaganda effort carried by slick PR firms, industry funded front groups and a predictable cabal of right wing industry toadies from cable TV and talk radio. In pitting itself against public disclosure and reasonable regulation, the natural gas industry is once again proving that it is its own worst enemy.
